Martin squadron cadets earn milestone awards

9/15/2018 – Middle River, MD. – Cadets from the Glenn L. Martin Composite Squadron Civil Air Patrol earned milestone awards as part of the Cadet Program.

Cadet James Demonte-Weckel completed phase 2 of the CAP Cadet Program, earned General Billy Mitchell Award 69,178 and promoted to Cadet Second Lieutenant. Demote-Weckel joined the squadron in October 2014 and graduated from Tri-Wing Encampment in 2015.

Cadet Felix Caratini completed phase 2 of the CAP Cadet Program, earned General Billy Mitchell Award 69,244 and promoted to Cadet Second Lieutenant. Caratini joined the squadron in December 2015 and graduated from Tri-Wing Encampment in 2017. He returned to Tri-Wing in 2018 as staff.

Lt. Col. Frank Jarosinski, Group 2 Commander, presented both awards.

To earn the General Billy Mitchell Award, cadets take a comprehensive leadership and aerospace test, present a speech in front of the squadron and pass a physical fitness test.

Cadets Kendall Jarrett and Willis Morales completed phase 1 of the CAP Cadet Program, earned the Wright Brothers Award and promoted to Cadet Staff Sergeant. The Wright Brothers Award is the first milestone in the cadet program.

Other cadets from the squadron earned milestone awards in 2018.

Cadet Kent Chesley earned the Wright Brothers Award.

Cadets Nicholas Korotunow and Jakob Ranlet earned the General. Billy Mitchell Award. Korotunow is now attending Embry Riddle University in Florida and Ranlet joined the United States Army.

Cadets Jacob Iacarino and Robert Miner earned the Amelia Earhart Award. The Earhart Award is the third milestone in the CAP Cadet Program and is the final award to complete phase 3. Cadets earning the Earhart Award are promoted to Cadet Captain. Miner is currently enrolled at the University of Maryland – Baltimore County and Iacarino is the Cadet Deputy Commander.

Cadet Wyatt Hartman earned the General Ira C. Eaker Award in February. The Eaker Award signifies the completion of the entire CAP Cadet Program. Cadets that earn the Eaker Award are promoted to Cadet Lieutenant Colonel and are eligible to take the Gen. Carl A. Spaatz Award test.

Nearly 1,500 CAP members serve in Maryland. Last year wing members flew 13 search and rescue missions. The wing was credited with four finds. Maryland Wing flew 32 missions for the State of Maryland. Members flew 2,245 hours in all mission categories. Volunteers contributed services estimated at $4.6 million. Civil Air Patrol, the longtime all-volunteer U.S. Air Force auxiliary, is the newest member of the Air Force’s Total Force.
